The government has unveiled its latest weapon in the war against drugs - in the form of a graphic television advert and a fictional dog called Pablo.
The £1 million campaign, which warns teenagers about the dangers of cocaine use, was launched today and features the dog, who has been used as a drugs mule.
One advert shows a person fishing around for drugs stashed inside the dog's stomach and finishes with him ooking up at the television screen.
Another advert shows the dog seeking out coke users to find out what happens to them as he witnesses one young woman suffering a heart attack.
The advert comes as a British Crime Survey reveals cocaine use has doubled in the last 10 years.
In 1998 only 0.5 per cent of people questioned had used the drug in the previous month, a figure which rose to 1 per cent last year.
FRANK spokesman Dr Ken Checinski said: 'Cocaine is psychologically more addictive than many other substances, such as alcohol and cannabis, and can easily become a habit that controls your life.
'It's also cut with various toxic ingredients such as phenacetin and benzocaine and is known to put extreme pressure on the heart, putting the user at serious risk of a heart attack - no matter what their age.'
Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said the new hard-hitting adverts emphasised that the harm caused by cocaine could be wide-ranging.
'Taking cocaine can have serious consequences, legally and socially, as well as from a health and environmental point of view,' he said.
'While cocaine use among young people has remained stable and the number of seizures of the drug has increased by more than a third, we want young people thinking about using cocaine to be aware of the damage it causes to themselves, their families, the wider community and the environment.
The advert will be shown tonight on Channel 4 at 10.15pm.
