Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards was in hospital last night after an horrific clash of heads which left him unconscious and requiring oxygen.

Richards collided with team-mate Tal Ben Haim during Sunday's 3-0 Barclays Premier League win over West Ham and needed on-field treatment for eight minutes.

He was sent to hospital for observation and scans after leaving the field on a stretcher and receiving oxygen early in the second half.

Subsequent reports suggested that the young defender had regained consciousness and was talking before he left the stadium.

But Richards is an obvious doubt for City's UEFA Cup tie in Denmark on Thursday and also for England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia in early September.

City manager Mark Hughes said: 'It was obviously a very nasty injury and worrying at the time but we are hopeful the hospital scans will banish any thoughts of a serious problem.'

Meanwhile, England left back Ashley Cole believes Deco can win the title for Chelsea after the midfielder scored the winner at Wigan on Sunday.

Cole said: 'It's Deco, once again, with a bit of magic. I think that's what's going to help us win the league this season.'
